CBD Tarot de Marseille
Subject
Tarot de Marseille
Description
78 cards, plus a title card and one blank card, with an LWB in a cardboard tuckbox. The LWB is quite good compared to most; it is worth taking the time to read it.
The cards measure 12 cm tall x 6.2 cm wide.
The card stock is marvelous to the touch; very flexible, with a smooth finish that isn't quite matte and isn't quite glossy. This deck could easily be riffle-shuffled.
The card backs feature a reversible blue and white pattern.
La Justice is VIII and La Force (Strength) is XI. Le Mat (The Fool) is unnumbered.
Suits are Coins, Cups, Wands, and Swords. The court cards are Valet (Page), Cavalier (Knight), Reyne (Queen), and Roy (King).
The minor arcana are illustrated in the TdM style.
This deck is based on restorations of several printings of the 1760 Nicolas Conver Tarot de Marseille; the LWB offers some background into this process.
I haven't used this deck often (as I prefer the Noblet TdM), but I can see the CBD being a good go-to reading deck. It's durable, easy to handle and shuffle, and simply beautiful. A classic.
Interestingly, 3 different years are listed on the materials with this deck. On the title card, 2 different years are given -- the restoration of the deck was completed in 2010, and the CC (creative commons) licensing is given as 2011. However, in the back of the LWB, the CC year is listed as 2013.
Speaking of Creative Commons, both the LWB and title card list this deck as licensed under Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA 3.0. To quote from the LWB, this means "that it is available for non-commerical use without need of further permission."
The creator, Yoav Ben-Dov, passed away in 2016.
