Title

Ship of Fools Tarot

Subject

Fools
Art
Sebastian Brant
Narrenschiff

Description

78 cards plus 2 spread cards, packaged as part of a set with a softcover companion book, in a typical large format Llewellyn set box. There's an inner white cardboard box ostensibly for the cards, but it's too large. There's no title card.

(Note that the book and box are not pictured here; I have them stored separately and haven't run across them lately.)

Cards measure 11.7 cm tall x 8.2 cm wide.

The card stock is smooth and flexible, with a matte finish.

This is almost, but not quite, a black and white deck. It's a brown and cream deck.

Justice is 8 and Strength is 11. The Fool is numbered 0 (and titled "The Vagabond").

The deck is fully scenic. The majors show a Marseille influence and the minors show a RWS influence, yet this deck is very much doing its own thing, as well.

Thematically, this deck is based on "Das Narrenschiff" (The Ship of Fools) by Sebastian Brant. The character of the Fool appears throughout the deck, yet the cards are anything but foolish -- the art is compelling, clear, detailed, curious, charming . . . I could go on and on. I've always found this deck to be a pleasure to use.

I've also found it to be astoundingly good for financial and business readings.

Suits are Swords, Coins, Cups, and Staves. Courts are Page, Knight, Queen, and King.

p.s. I've pictured the 9 of Swords here in addition to the typical set of cards, because this is one of my all-time favorite examples of a 9 of Swords depiction. Also, notice the detail in the Queen of Swords! The courts in this deck are amazing.
